What is the Driftwood Community?
Driftwood is a unique community nestled in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, located southwest of Austin and southeast of Dripping Springs. Known for its charm and natural beauty, Driftwood offers a blend of history, culture, and scenic landscapes that make it truly special. Beloved landmarks include the historic Old Driftwood Store, a variety of inviting wineries and acclaimed restaurants, and churches that have long been gathering places for neighbors and friends. Yet perhaps most cherished of all are Driftwood’s natural treasures, rolling hills, lush vegetation, and the awe-inspiring canopy of star-filled night skies that continue to inspire residents and visitors alike.
As growth reaches Driftwood, the community is committed to ensuring that development happens in a way that honors the landscape and preserves what makes this place remarkable. Residents are working together to educate developers about the importance of protecting Driftwood’s rural character and dark skies. We believe everyone benefits when developments incorporate thoughtful practices like covered lighting, maintaining natural buffers along roadways, and keeping signs low in height and minimal in number.
We understand that growth is inevitable, but it can be guided in a way that supports the environment, safeguards the views of the night sky, and keeps our roadsides free from visual clutter. The more we work together to uphold these values, the more we can ensure that Driftwood’s essence endures for future generations.
In pursuit of this vision, the Driftwood HCS Area Definition and Historical Designation Committees were established with three key responsibilities: defining the geographic boundaries of Driftwood, designing signage to mark entry points into the community’s core area, and identifying historical sites through the creation of an engaging Interactive Storybook. These efforts not only celebrate Driftwood’s past but also help shape its future, fostering a sense of place and pride for all who call this remarkable community home.
